Welcome to the Granite city

Brendan Behan wrote of Ballyknockan in a piece entitled "Journey to the Jewel of Wicklow"in the Irish press in  October 1952 , "it is a beautiful land round here and would be better known if the people were as vocal as the Killarney people. Maybe they want to keep it to themselves".
That was sixty three years ago and its still considered to be a relatively unknown place and was featured recently on UTV's "Lesser spotted Journeys". Ironic really considering there is a lot of Ballyknockan in Dublin. Most of the Iconic buildings have been built with  Ballyknockan granite. I bet most people walking through the city never stop to think where the rock came from, Well you know now and the next time you walk from Grafton st down to O'Connell St you are looking at Ballknockan granite. Anyway this is the start of a blog about all things Ballyknockan and will be updated with stories, history, folklore, music, and lots of other interesting tings about Ballyknockan......so as one of Ballyknockan's best loved characters, Mick Costello would say "Welcome to the Granite City".
